Guided
tours on the history and importance of Trafalgar Square, Parliament, and
Westminster Abbey are so interesting for about an hour, maybe two. But at one point
you just want to give up trying to force intellectual thinking about the effect
of this building on the rest of the world and just take a picture in front of
it.
So,
in our free afternoon came after another guided tour, this time of the British
Library. And I mean it does have the Magna Carta and handwritten Beatles
lyrics, but compared to the Library of Congress, it looks like an elementary
gym. It is very large, but I am more impressed with Bizzell every time I walk
into it then I was with this place. Anyway, after that, to make up for our pent
up tourist needs, we pretty much hit up all the painfully embarrassing tourist
attractions. First up was Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station (Harry Potter).
Next, we took a couple of transfers on the tube to get to Abbey Road and
recreate the infamous Beatles cover. Then, on to 221b Baker street to take
pictures in front of a museum dedicated to the world’s greatest detective,
Sherlock Holmes. For dinner, of course, we headed to the original Hard Rock,
and even paid extra for the larger souvenir glass. And finally, to top off our
touristy day, I made everyone wait at the tube station while I ran outside to
take a picture with one of the only blue police boxes left in London (Doctor
Who’s TARDIS).
I am
actually quite satisfied with our willingness to be embarrassed to create these
memories.
